The picture below depicts the famous Lozi annual ceremony known as Ku-omboka, which means literary to come out of water unto drier ground. This is one of the oldest African cultural heritage. It has been going on for centuries, and has become an international and touristic venture. Every year when the mighty Zambezi River, known in Silozi as "Lyambai Ngume ilanda", floods up and overflows, the turns into some kind of lake or sea, about 200 kilometers long and 25 kilometers wide and water rises to 5 meters deep above the ground. Life on the plain mounds become unbearable for the local people as every creature competes with humans for the dry ground, including red ants, rats and sometimes snakes.
The plain residents and fishermen are forced to move their belongings along with their cattle to the higher ground. The movement is highlighted by Ku-omboka ceremony in March or April, depending on the flood levels. During Ku-omboka, the King of Barotseland, usually known as the Litunga moves from His summer capital, Lealui to the winter capital, Limulunga. This is a spectacular event. The more you see it the more you want to see. Ku-omboka transcends racial, tribal, religious, political and social divide. It is the most beautiful weekend of the year characterized by international and indigeneous diversity. Every mind is focussed on the beauty of the occassion and it is irresistable. Dancing to the tune of the royal sounds happens sporadically. The air is filled with joy and allulations.

The significance of Ku-omboka cannot be overephasized. It is joy filled with apprehention. For the guests most of what they see is the aspect of joy, but the local residents have to start again. Their homes in the plain have been destroyed by water. They have to go through a painful transition, even though most of it is swallowed by the joy of seeing the Litunga, the royal boats, and the paddlers in action. After this real life dilema kicks in. This is one example of situations that this organization may seek to help.
Barotseland Peace Foundation seeks to coordinate a collision of support and initiative to help the local people settle down as they go through the process of rebuilding and repairing their dwellings after Ku-omboka. This organization seeks to go beyond ku-omboka weekend and find a way of helping improve the lives of the local community. Our efforts are aimed at helping the local community to "omboka" from poverty unto good living standards, to omboka from disease unto the joy of healthful living, to omboka from perpetual social and economic bondage to spiritual and economic freedom.
